Internal Family Systems for social-justice oriented queers & spoonies
You’ve been learning about IFS. You’ve read an IFS book (or three). Or you’ve watched some demo videos. You sense that this could be a key to finally getting some shifts in you you’ve been wanting for a while. You want the magic that seems promised in the book(s) and demos.
But, even though you’re doing the exercises and meditations, spending time with your parts, you’re just not getting the results you think are possible. Your protector parts won’t change their jobs no matter how you try or ask. And getting to your exiles seems impossible.
It’s not your fault it’s not working. IFS parts work is more complicated than the books or videos let on. No one tells you that the dramatic healing videos are recorded after the client has already done months or years of IFS sessions to prepare for the profound healing experience you get to witness. And the exercises and meditations can be helpful for getting to know parts, but they aren’t enough to untangle complex tangles of parts’ relationships.
The thing is, IFS absolutely can be magic. But, it also takes time.
To be successful, we start by honoring the parts of you that want healing to be fast. Of course they do. How kind of them to want you to be relieved of suffering *now*. We can let those parts know we will be working in the quickest safe & effective way we have access to.
For many of us, our inner landscapes are full of conflict and contention, judgment and criticism. Our first journey is to shift the internal orientation you have towards your parts from conflict and judgment to curiosity and empathy. Because healing can’t happen in a battlefield.
When the inner landscape shifts, then it becomes possible for us to help parts shift their context, and eventually their jobs. Protector parts do the job that they do because it’s the only thing that makes sense to them given their context of their beliefs about the world and themselves and the exiles they’re protecting. In an environment of curiosity and empathy, protector parts can finally begin feeling enough trust and hope to be willing to receive help to let go of burdensome beliefs and to let you help the wounded exiles.
If this sounds like what you’re looking for, I can help.
Since I took the IFS Level 1 course in 2014/15, I’ve felt like IFS is my native language. I’m passionate about helping people uncover the magic of IFS and the impact it can have on people’s internal landscapes. And, as I parent my now 4 year old, I’m growing in my passion for helping people learn how to really care for, understand, and support their inner 4 year olds (and parts of all other ages) who are carrying wounds or trying to deal with situations way too big for them.
This passion is paired with being a level 2 certified IFS practitioner. I’ve also been a Program Assistant for an IFS Level 1 course. I’ve attended additional IFS trainings, including Nuance & Attunement in IFS and IFS and Non-Normal states.
I’ve facilitated over 700 IFS sessions, supporting many clients in shifting their internal landscapes and creating the possibility of parts changing their jobs. In addition, I’ve been a non-profit bookkeeper and accountant for 20 years, which has honed my skills in untangling big complex issues and helping people work through hard, shame inducing things without shame.
